Qatar eyes bank salary transfer law by year-end

DOHA, November 10, 2014

Qatar is likely to pass before the year-end an amendment to the labour law that will make it compulsory for employers to transfer salaries to banks, a report said.

The amendments in the law will include financial rights of workers as well as mandatory transfer of employees’ salaries to banks by the end of every month, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Dr Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi was quoted as saying in The Peninsula report.

The minister, speaking at a recent meeting with the media, also dismissed the likelihood of introducing minimum wages for workers in Qatar, since the country’s economy operates on the basis of demand and supply, according to the report.

The Minister was also quoted as saying that there is no ban on recruiting workers to Qatar from any country or of any nationality.

Qatarisation has reached 20 per cent and the ministry is planning to increase it to 30 per cent in the near future, the Minister was quoted as saying in the report.
