Manama suq 'to be developed into tourist destination'

Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) held key discussions with members of the Old Markets Committee on the revamping of the historic Manama suq and its transformation into a significant touristic and commercial destination.

The meeting, which was chaired by the BTEA chief executive Shaikh Khaled bin Humood Al Khalifa, dwelt at length several topics related to the project including the grants provided and the budget for the development of Manama souq’s main facilities and services, which will be later presented to BCCI’s board of directors.

First deputy chairman of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry and head of the Old Market Committee Khalid Rashid Al Zayani was also present at meeting held at BCCI office.

The meeting also discussed the launching of Manama Souq’s website besides installation of signage boards and incubators in a designated area for innovative crafts.

Speaking at the meeting, Shaikh Khaled, said: "It is our pleasure to witness the joint co-operation between all concerned governmental and private bodies in order to achieve the objectives of the project and its overall success."

"It is important that the project is executed based on best practice to enhance and position the Manama Souq as a significant touristic and commercial destination," he stated.

Al Zayani, stressed on the importance of holding regular meetings in order to stay updated with the latest developments of this vital project that seeks to meet the needs of all Bahraini citizens.

The BCCI chief pointed out that the government had taken great strides to revive the souq which is considered to be one of the most popular attractions in the Kingdom for shoppers looking for original and distinct products.

"This comes in line with the BTEA’s long term strategy to further develop the Kingdom’s tourism sector by attracting Bahraini visitors and tourists from the GCC countries and beyond," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
