Bahrain starts work on new flyover

MANAMA, August 1, 2016

Bahrain will commence construction work on the new Nuwaidrat flyover as part of the development of Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway project (Alba/Nuwaidrat interchanges).

Traffic at the Nuwaidrat junction will be diverted from today (August 1) to carry out the key project, a BNA report said.

Roads assistant undersecretary at the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Huda Fakhro said the installation of some of the piles for the flyover has already been completed, but diversion  of traffic around the roundabout was necessary to build the remaining piles.

The Nuwaidrat flyover involves the installation of 153 piles of 1 m diameter and about 10 m deep. An in-situ concrete system using the post-tensioning technique will be used to construct the bridge, Fakhro said.

She explained that the work location, the Nuwaidrat Roundabout, will be covered and the existing three lanes will be kept open. Thus, traffic movement in the roundabout area will not be affected by the diversion.

The ministry is coordinating with the Traffic General Directorate to ensure safe and smooth traffic flow during the implementation of the project, which is expected to last about a year.
