Qatar starts work on mega water reservoir

DOHA, January 5, 2016

Installation of 11.2-km-long pipelines has started under the mega reservoir (Package E) project
being developed by Qatar.

The project forms part of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation's (Kahramaa) key decision to launch an ambitious water project to provide strategic water storage within its network system.

The mega scheme is aimed at meeting Qatar's water demand for seven days and promoting safety of drinking water for local residents and advance local economic development.

Kahramaa broke ground on the project in May last year along with Chinese construction major CGGC.

Under this project, five separate packages (A – E) cover material supply, construction, testing and commissioning related to the reservoirs, pumping stations, pipework, mechanical, electrical, ICA (instrumentation, control and automation), civil, structural and architectural works for the mega reservoir sites at Umm Birka, Umm Slal, Al Thumama, Rawdhat Rashid and Abu Nakhla.

Package E of the project, which involves the setting up of five main reservoirs with 496,000 cu m capacity, a pressure pump station, 33.2-km-long main pipes and auxiliary facilities, will be completed in three years, said a statement from CGGC.

The first phase of the project will provide storage capacity for the expected water demand for seven days in 2026, with five mega reservoir sites, stated the Chinese construction major.

The second phase will provide the seven days of water storage for expected demand in 2036 by adding additional reservoirs within the five mega reservoirs sites, it stated.

The CGGC said the water supply line installation - the first node duration of the project - has been launched 15 days ahead of schedule, thus getting a good start on the project management and laying a solid foundation for the overall project performance.

The scope of work includes 11.2 km DN1,200-1,600 mm pipe installation, covering 14 valve stations and 16 anchorage blocks along the line, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
