GEM wins $65m Qatar land reclamation contract

DOHA, March 24, 2015

Qatar-based Gulf Earth Moving (GEM), a subsidiary of Belgian group Aertssen, has won a QR239 million ($65.7 million)  land reclamation contract at The New Port Project in capital Doha.

As per the deal, GEM will be in charge of dredging, reclamation and breakwater construction to create 3 million sq m of extra terrain at the New Qatar Emiri Naval Base and the Hamad Port, reported The Gulf Times.

The contract includes installation of a causeway, a coastal protection by means of armour rocks over a length of 1,350 m and undertaking the necessary soil improvement works before filling the lagoon area with 9 million cu m of processed materials, it stated.

Princess Astrid of Belgium and Jassim Bin Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, Minister of Transport and NPPSC chairman, hosted the signing ceremony at the Ministry of Transport premises in Doha, the report added.
