The technology...enables easier on-site renovation planning.

Mitsubishi develops 3D model reconstruction technology

TOKYO, February 12, 2015

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has developed three-dimensional (3D) model reconstruction technology to reconstruct accurate 3D models of large indoor areas.

It will use a tablet equipped with a 3D sensor, for efficient on-site planning of renovation work, said a statement.

The company plans to commercialise a 3D modelling tool for offices, factory interiors and elevator shafts in 2018, it said.

The new technology will extract planes automatically from 3D point-cloud data captured using a tablet equipped with a 3D sensor.

It will register a sequence of 3D data by automatically finding and associating identical planes and points in different frames to reconstruct an accurate 3D model of an entire area. A software will process the 3D data in real time at a speed of four frames per second.

Efficient and accurate 3D modelling is very useful as 2D floor plans and 3D models of existing constructions — such as elevator shafts, pipes and wires in factories, and details of building interiors—often are not available, or are not accurate, said the statement.

Meanwhile, the conventional systems for reconstructing 3D models require extensive time to take measurements, or are not suitable for large areas, it added. - TradeArabia News Service
