Dubai, July 30, 2007
Nearly 60 per cent work on the Dh15.5 billion ($4.22 billion) Dubai Metro project is complete, according to a report.
"The red line of the Dubai Metro will be operational from September 9, 2009," Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), was quoted as saying by the Gulf News report.
Al Tayer reportedly said the Dubai Metro is the biggest driverless metro project worldwide as a single unit.
Al Tayer also revealed RTA's strategic Plan-2015 which focuses on three key aspects. The first one is aimed at reducing traffic congestion on roads. The second part of the strategic plan is to improve traffic safety levels in Dubai. The third aspect, he said, is to encourage community members to use mass transport modes.
