$800m project for Bahrain beach

Manama, July 16, 2007

Bahrain’s Al Jazair beach will receive a major facelift with the creation of an $800 million resort and other key facilities.

The Ithmaar group will be in charge of this project under an agreement it has signed with the Economic Development Board (EDB), a BNA report said.

The beach in Zallaq will also witness the construction of a series of three- and four-star hotels under the project.

Ithmaar Development Company chief executive officer Mohammed Khaleel Al Sayed said the agreement signed with the EDB leases the beach to the company for 99 years to implement the project in two phases.

In the final phase of the project, a number of small islands will be built in the southern part of the beach and the chalet area will also be upgraded, he said in a statement.

Al Sayed said the company will be committed to offering high- class family tourism in the resort. The beach facilities will include restaurants, coffee shops and retail shops, he said.

The implementation of the first phase of the project will start early next year and will take three to four years to complete.
The first phase will concentrate on the establishment of small hotels and a number of facilities offering basic services where the cottages are now situated.
