Bahraini panel to address illegal spending

MANAMA, January 6, 2015

A team of Bahraini government officials has been formed to address violations detailed in the latest National Audit Office report.

It will be headed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The team will study the report, which was released last year, and group the violations into different categories including criminal charges and procedural infringements, said Information Affairs Minister and official government spokesman Isa Al Hammadi.

"Some violations will be referred to the judiciary, others will be taken to the Public Prosecution and some will be investigated by the Interior Ministry," he said during a media briefing following yesterday's Cabinet session at Gudaibiya Palace.

"However, the majority are procedural and involve disregard to the Finance Ministry and Civil Service Bureau guidelines, and they just require fixing to bring them in line with proper administrative standards and ensure they don't get repeated."

Al Hammadi said the work team will ensure that strict action will be taken against those behind squandering public money.

"We, in the government, will be tough with serious violations especially that see public money being wasted or unrightfully spent," he added.

Parliament chairman Ahmed Al Mulla also called for tough measures against violators after receiving the report yesterday from bureau chief Hassan Al Jalahma at his office in the National Assembly Complex.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet also reviewed a report on the government's curb on unnecessary spending which was submitted by Deputy Premier Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa. - TradeArabia News Service
