The Saudi Red Sea Authority (SRSA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with International Registries to strengthen the Red Sea’s appeal to private yacht owners and expand regulated chartering opportunities.
Signed at the Monaco Yacht Show, the agreement aims to
support the growth of yacht tourism and unlock investment opportunities across
marinas and related marine tourism services.
A key element of the MoU is the recognition of the Yacht
Engaged in Trade (YET) programme within Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea jurisdiction.
The programme allows eligible privately registered yachts to
undertake charter activities for limited periods without changing to commercial
registration, subject to applicable requirements and regulations.
By reducing the administrative and financial burden
associated with registration changes, the initiative is expected to make
chartering more accessible to yacht owners while maintaining safety and
regulatory standards.
It could also
increase the number and variety of yachts available to visitors, strengthening
the ability of Saudi coastal destinations to attract regional and international
yacht traffic.
The expansion of yachting activity is expected to generate
wider economic benefits for businesses supporting yacht owners and guests.
Increased demand could benefit marina berths, maintenance
and repair services, provisioning, refuelling and yacht management, as well as
accommodation, restaurants, entertainment and transportation.
Higher yacht traffic could also contribute to greater marina
occupancy and more efficient use of existing marine infrastructure, potentially
supporting investment in the wider marine tourism ecosystem.
The agreement is also expected to create opportunities for
private-sector participation in marina operations, yacht chartering, management
and support services.
Growth in the sector could generate direct and indirect
employment across marine tourism and related activities.
Under the MoU, SRSA and International Registries will
exchange knowledge and expertise and cooperate on international best practices
covering safety, environmental sustainability, marine environmental protection
and yachting industry development.
The two organisations will coordinate through designated
representatives and regular meetings to assess progress and support
implementation.
The agreement forms part of SRSA’s efforts to develop a
regulatory framework that responds to the needs of yacht owners and operators
while maintaining compliance with safety and marine environmental requirements.
Through international partnerships and regulatory
initiatives, SRSA aims to strengthen the Red Sea’s competitiveness as a global
yachting destination and support the expansion of coastal tourism.
The authority said the development is aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives to diversify the economy, expand tourism and increase the sector’s contribution to gross domestic product. -TradeArabia News Service
