Sarens, a provider of heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental services, is supporting Rayong Ruamlek Company with the mechanical dismantling of the former PTT Asahi petrochemical plant in Map Ta Phut, Rayong, Thailand.

Work began in May and is scheduled for completion in August, supporting the safe decommissioning and clearance of industrial assets.

The project forms part of wider industrial transition and redevelopment in Thailand, where decommissioning legacy petrochemical facilities can support material recycling, equipment reuse and future land development while creating opportunities for the local workforce.

Following a detailed assessment of the site, Sarens deployed a fleet including the LR 1600-2, CC 2800, CC 2800-1, CKE 2500 and GMK 5220 cranes, with capacities ranging from 220 to 600 tonnes. Crane configurations were tailored to lift weights, working radii, heights and site constraints.

The crawler cranes were transported by road from Sarens Thailand’s yard and assembled on site over several days, including boom and counterweight installation, rigging and load testing.

Sarens has completed critical lifts involving steel structures, process vessels, pipe racks and heavy machinery.

The heaviest lift so far weighed 210 tonnes and was carried out at a working radius of about 50 metres using the LR 1600-2 and CC 2800 cranes. Components were lowered to ground level before being transferred to designated laydown and transport areas.

The project has involved challenges including confined plant areas, maintaining clearances around existing pipe racks and live equipment, ground preparation and coordinating heavy movements amid seasonal rain and wind.

The PTT Asahi plant was once a major contributor to Thailand’s petrochemical industry, producing up to 200,000 tonnes of acrylonitrile annually and 70,000 tonnes of methacrylate.

Sarens has also supported major industrial and energy projects across Thailand and Southeast Asia, including work for PTT Global Chemical, Thai Oil, GULF and major refinery and petrochemical developments in Indonesia. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
