Saudi Arabia says won't allow airspace to be used in action against Iran

Saudi Arabia will not allow its airspace or territory to be used for military actions against Iran, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, told Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in a phone call on Tuesday, state news agency SPA reported.

During the call, the Crown Prince said the Kingdom supports efforts to resolve differences through dialogue in a way that strengthens security and stability in the region, according to SPA.

Iranian media earlier reported that Pezeshkian told the Saudi Crown Prince that Tehran welcomes any process, within the framework of international law, that helps prevent war.

The Saudi statement comes amid heightened regional tensions following comments by US President Donald Trump, who said last week that a US “armada” was heading towards the Middle East, while adding that he hoped military force would not be necessary.

US officials have since said the deployment includes the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and accompanying warships entering the region, describing the move as a defensive measure intended to deter escalation rather than signal imminent military action.

The Saudi position follows a similar stance taken by the United Arab Emirates, which has said it would not permit the use of its airspace or territorial waters for military actions against Iran.

Trump’s warnings to Tehran were linked to Iran’s handling of protests and its nuclear programme, although nationwide demonstrations in Iran have since subsided.
