Sharjah to get new waste-to-energy plant

A plant for converting waste into energy will be built in Sharjah, as directed by Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, a report said.
Sheikh Sultan issued the instructions during a visit to Bee’ah’s Waste Management Center (WMC), located in the Saj’ah industrial city in Sharjah. He also ordered the construction of a new headquarters for Bee’ah, Sharjah Environment Company, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Sheikh Sultan was updated about the latest achievements of the center’s various facilities, which include those for material recovery, construction and demolition waste recycling, the tire recycling, the e-waste dismantling and processing and the recently-established facilities such as the car bodies recycling and shredding facility and the compost plant, as well as the organic composting facility, the report said.
Occupying an area of 3.75 sq km, Bee’ah’s WMC includes some of the most advanced waste recovery and recycling facilities.
Sheikh Sultan was briefed on the company’s activities and environmental awareness campaigns, as well as on Bee’ah’s fleet and container management system which employs state-of-the-art technology by using containers fully equipped with sensors monitoring the amount of waste.
"We affirm our commitment to achieve our ambitions and objectives to make Sharjah the first city in the Middle East to benefit from 100 per cent waste diversion,” Salim bin Mohammed Al Owais, chairman of the board of directors of Bee’ah, was quoted as saying in the report.
"To achieve the ambitions and goals of the company, we are using cutting-edge technology to recycle all types of waste in WMC, which today includes vital units such as waste-to-energy converting facilities, organic fertiliser facilities, and advanced metal recycling facilities,” he added.
