US firm wins key $35m reclamation deal in Bahrain

Manama, July 25, 2014

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation, a US-based dredging services provider listed on Nasdaq, has been awarded a Works Ministry contract valued at approximately $35 million.

The contract encompasses phases one and two of a development project within Hidd Port, the company said.

Under the contract, Great Lakes will dredge 5.8 million cu m to build a 156-acre footprint on which a factory and additional facilities will be built, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The company is looking forward to being involved in another strategic project for the government.

"We appreciate the opportunity to work with the ministry on this land reclamation project," the company's international operations vice-president John O'Brien said.

"We recognise the importance of this project to Bahrain as it will contribute to further economic growth in the country and are pleased to be a part of the endeavour," he added.

Great Lakes plans to use three hoppers and one hydraulic dredge to complete the project on an expedited timeframe.

Phase one of the project has a target completion date of late autumn this year while phase two will be completed by the end of the first quarter next year.

The company said it will mobilise immediately to commence work on the project. Great Lakes has worked closely with both the Bahrain government and investors over the last 15 years delivering many significant projects. - TradeArabia News Servce
