DSC holds fencing show
Dubai, July 25, 2009
Dubai Sports Council (DSC) recently organised a fencing demonstration by UAE Junior Fencing team, who staged mock duels at the play and compete interactive stage at Modhesh World, an entertainment hub in Dubai.
Following the friendly duels, team members were honoured for their contribution to the sport.
“Fencing is not an exclusive sport, but for everyone,” said Mohammed Abid Alkhoud, secretary general of UAE Fencing Federation.
“It is a challenge for both the body and mind, requiring a blend of patience, willpower, discipline and competitiveness," he added.
"Fencing develops agility, endurance, suppleness, grace, and overall fitness, and helps participants sharpen the mind’s problem–solving abilities. It is easily learnt and has even been adapted to fit the needs of the blind and individuals using wheelchairs."
Fencing is a traditional and prestigious Olympic sport since 1912 and an integral part of the Arabic culture and heritage. The Emirates Foundation of Fencing was established to organise and supervise this game in the UAE.
In the year 2005, the foundation was transformed into a full federation for fencing in the UAE and is now known as the UAE Fencing Federation.
One among the audience members, Mohammed Salem, from Dubai, volunteered to face the youngest member of the team, Abdul Ahmed Fathi, in a duel.
“It was fun but I was a little nervous as he is an expert and this is my first time! I thoroughly enjoyed it,” Salem said. – TradeArabia News Service
