WGES highlights role of special committees

The Steering Committee of the upcoming World Green Economy Summit (WGES) in Dubai, UAE held its third coordination meeting to discuss the role of the specialised committees and outline their capacities.

The meeting, chaired by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, vice chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, managing director and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), and chairman of WGES, also aimed to ensure robust preparation for the upcoming summit, an important platform to support the growth of the green economy in the UAE and around the world.

The 5th edition of WGES is set to take place from October 24 to 25 under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The summit is organised by Dewa and the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO) in collaboration with international partners under the theme ‘Driving Innovation, Leading Change’, which will focus on green capital, digital transformation and leadership and social engagement.

Al Tayer said: “The summit is in line with the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, that aims to promote sustainable development in the UAE, which is a vital aspect of the UAE Centennial 2071, for the UAE to be the best country in the world by that date.

“Additionally, the Summit aligns well with the UAE Vision 2021, Dubai Plan 2021 as well as our continuous pursuit to achieve the goals of Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which intends that 7 percent of Dubai's total power output will come from clean energy by 2020, 25 percent by 2030 and 75 percent by 2050 such that Dubai becomes a global hub for green economy.

During the meeting, the agenda, summary of the work in progress undertaken by the committees and the achievements attained to date were reviewed. The meeting also outlined the strategies to host VIPs, decision-makers and thought leaders from the public and private sectors and professionals in the fields of green economy and sustainable development.

Al Tayer stressed the need for continuous coordination between the financial, logistic, organisational and media committees to ensure the success of the event. He also emphasised the need to enhance communication and coordination regionally and internationally to reinforce WGES’ message of achieving growth, enhancing the transformation into a green economy and establishing a culture of sustainable development. – TradeArabia News Service
