Oman, Masdar to ink key wind power project deals

MUSCAT, September 11, 2017

Oman's Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAEC) is set to sign a number of agreements for a major wind power project being jointly built with the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) in the Dhofar region of the sultanate, said a report.

It will include signing of the Power Purchase Agreement by RAEC with Oman Power and Water Procurement Company, and Electricity Connection Agreement with Oman Electricity Transmission Company, with the EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract been awarded by Masdar to the successful bidder, reported Oman Observer.

The 50-MW wind energy project will be based in Fatkhait area at Wilayat of Shalem and Halaniyat Islands in the governorate of Dhofar.

A first-of-its-kind in the Gulf region, the Dhofar wind project is expected to generate about 160 GWh per year, enough to meet the power needs of about 16,000 homes, said the report.

It is likely to start operations in the third quarter of 2019, it added.
