The Hassyan Clean Coal Power Plant

Dewa awards contract for 400 kV transformer at Hassyan

DUBAI, August 15, 2016

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), has announced the award of a contract for the installation and launching of the main 400 kilovolt (kV) power transformer, in addition to a number of other projects, worth a total cost of Dh197 million ($53.63 million), at the Hassyan Clean Coal Power Plant.

The project is part of Dewa’s efforts to increase the capacity and efficiency of electricity and transmission networks, in adherence with its vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility.

This project supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy, which aims to provide 7 per cent of Dubai’s energy from clean energy sources by 2020. It will increase this target to 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent by 2050, the company said.

Dewa works to achieve the fifth pillar of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which focuses on creating an environmentally-friendly energy mix, with 25 per cent coming from solar energy, 7 per cent from nuclear power, 7 per cent from clean coal, and 61 per cent from gas by 2030, to make Dubai a global centre for clean energy and green economy, it added.

The project also aims to develop the 400 kV electricity transmission networks, by connecting the substation with current electricity networks, said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of Dewa.

The Hassyan clean coal power plant is based on the IPP model, and will generate 2,400 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The project has a planned commercial operation date of March 2023. This is also the first project of its kind in the region, and will be developed according to the highest international standards, the company said. - TradeArabia News Service
