The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) has announced plans to set up a new subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company for the safe and reliable operations of the emirate's upcoming power plants.

A wholly-owned Enec subsidiary, Nawah has been mandated to safely operate and maintain Units 1 to 4 in Barakah in adherence to the highest standards of safety, security, quality, and to the UAE’s commitment of operational transparency.
 
Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, the chairman of the board of directors of Enec, was named the new Nawah chairman, while Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi has been appointed the vice chairwoman.

The other board members in the new energy company include Awaidha Murshed Ali Al-Marar, Mohammed A. Sahoo AlSuwaidi, Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, Mohammed Hamdan Al Falahi, David V, Scott and Mike Wallace.

The Enec board has appointed Mohammed Sahoo Al Suwaidi an energy industry veteran as the acting CEO of Nawah.

Al Suwaidi brings a solid 32 years of experience drawn from a diverse career in the oil and gas sector, serving in Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) group of companies in key sectors including operations and project management besides serving as a board member of the Enec since its inception.

A 1984 BSc graduate in chemical engineering from the University of Southern California, US, Al Suwaidi was the chief executive officer of Gasco for 10 long years.

In his new role, Al Suwaidi will be responsible for driving the company’s executive strategy and the development of UAE nationals, ensuring that the management, operations, and maintenance of Barakah Units 1 to 4 are conducted in adherence to the highest standards of safety, security, quality, and to the UAE’s commitment of operational transparency.

The board will govern the performance of Nawah Energy Company, ensuring that the company’s senior leadership team is accountable for the safe, quality-driven and reliable operations of the power plants, it added.

Al Mubarak dubbed the launch of Enec’s nuclear operating subsidiary as a significant milestone for the UAE peaceful nuclear energy program.

“As a world-class nuclear company, Nawah will safely operate the Units 1 to 4 in Barakah; this enables a higher level of focus in our work and an increased momentum towards the safe and quality-driven construction, commissioning and operations of the four Units in Barakah,” he added.

Enec chief executive Mohamed Al Hammadi said it will focus on the strategic growth of the nuclear industry across the UAE, its responsibilities as project owner of Barakah and shareholder of Nawah, as well as the safe and quality-driven delivery and commissioning of the Barakah project.

On his appointment, Al Suwaidi said: "Nawah is a fast-growing nuclear operating company that is committed to delivering on its regulatory obligations and contribute to the growth of the UAE by generating electricity from safety-driven operations of nuclear energy plants in Barakah."
