Laffan Refinery 2 to start operations by the end of next year.

SNC Lavlin unit wins Qatar construction contract

DOHA, November 22, 2015

Qatar Kentz, a unit of Canadian construction group SNC Lavlin, has won a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from global LNG leader Qatargas for its new water recycling facility at Ras Laffan Industrial City, located 80 km north of Doha, said a report.

Besides the EPC services, Qatar Kentz will also help in commissioning of the water recycling facility, reported the Gulf Times.

The unit at the Laffan Refinery 2, which is under construction, has been designed to handle the “treated industrial water” from Laffan Refinery 1 currently in operation, it stated.

The project is aimed at reducing the water consumption of these two plants and eliminating the discharge of treated industrial water, said the report.

Qatargas plans to reuse the recycled water in the Laffan Refineries 1 and 2 as boiler feed water and cooling water, it stated.

Laffan Refinery 2, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, Total, Idemitsu, Cosmo, Marubeni and Mitsui, is scheduled to start operations by the end of next year.

Laffan Refinery 2, to be operated by Qatargas, will process an additional 146,000 bpd of condensate recovered from the North Field, doubling the capacity of Laffan Refinery 1, the report added.
