Dubai to introduce new toll gates
Dubai, May 28, 2008
Dubai drivers will have to pay more to use the city's roads with the Roads and Transport Authority planning to install two new Salik road toll gates on Shaikh Zayed Road.
The new locations are at Al Maktoum Bridge and the Second Interchange, a report in Gulf News said.
The new toll gates will be introduced from September 9.
Motorists entering or exiting from Al Safa Road from the Second Interchange on Shaikh Zayed Road will also have to pay the toll, the report said.
'Installation of the new toll gates comes as part of the second phase of Salik system to regulate traffic on Dubai Roads,' Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the Board and executive director of RTA, was quoted as saying.
The RTA installed in July 2007 two Salik toll gate including one each at Al Garhoud Bridge and the Al Barsha (near Mall of the Emirates) on Shaikh Zayed Road in a bid to ease traffic congestion on the busiest highway in the city.
A motorist has to pay Dh4 for passing through the toll gate every time. However, maximum charge of using Salik a day for a motorist is Dh24.
The RTA said the first phase of Salik had reduced traffic at toll areas by 25 per cent, and lowered journey times on Sheikh Zayed Road by 50 per cent and increased average speeds from 40 to 80 km/h.
