Art masterpieces set for Bahrain expo
Manama, April 19, 2012
Artwork painted by some of the world's greatest contemporary artists is being brought to Bahrain this year for the first time, with organisers hoping to create a permanent art space in the country.
The Confluence of Masters is a first-of-its-kind exhibition being held at the Arts Centre, next to Bahrain National Museum, from June 3-5.
It will feature work by Italian painter and sculptor Ugo Nespolo, late Indian painter Maqbool Fida Husain, British artist Sacha Jafri, Pakistani modern artist Jamil Naqsh and acclaimed Emirati painter Abdul Qader Al Raes.
The collection, featuring work of 10 international artists under the Art Spice brand, is being organised by Art Select, in collaboration with Design Hub, under the patronage of Culture Minister Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa.
Bahrain is a second home for Art Select, making it a perfect place to launch the new Art Spice brand, Art Select managing director Kanika Subberwal told a Press conference yesterday at the Capital Club, Bahrain Financial Harbour.
"We first incorporated Bahrain into Art Select in 2008 and it is like home for me," she said.
"We have had a fantastic experience and it, therefore, only seemed right to launch Art Spice first in Bahrain before we take it to the rest of the GCC. We have the very special addition of Mr Nespolo, who will make his debut in the Middle East. He will also attend the exhibition to meet art lovers and budding artists."
Nespolo is known for his experimental films, applied artwork and collaborations with theatre, literature and advertising.
His work uses canvas, sculpture, boards, paper and installations. "He is the Pandora's Box of art and it is an honour to bring his work to the region," said Subberwal.
Organisers are also hoping for Nespolo to create his vision of Bahrain.
"He has read and seen many pictures of Bahrain and hopefully he can paint his image," she added.
Another master whose work is included in the exhibition is Mr Husain, a renowned figure and institution in India's art scene.
Commonly described as the Picasso of India, he was the highest paid painter in India and forced into exile after his house and work were attacked.
"He was one of the best painters India ever produced and it's an honour to even feature his work here," said Subberwal.
Bahrain has a thriving art scene with artists and collectors alike, added Art Spice chief executive Ansar Sajith.
"Some of the best events are coming to Bahrain, with the Formula One this weekend, and the country has a very good art culture. It is an honour to bring some of the best artists and their work from around the world together," he added.
Bahrain's art clients look for quality when it comes to buying and are very knowledgeable about art, said Subberwal.
"In 2008 when we launched Art Select in Bahrain, curators were doubtful about our success, but it has been a learning experience and we have discovered the kind of knowledge people here have about art.
The exhibition will be opened during a VIP ceremony 3. It will open to the public on June 4-5, but exact times have yet to be confirmed. – TradeArabia News Service
