Montblanc... tribute to Daniel Defoe

Montblanc releases new writers edition pen

DUBAI, November 2, 2014

Montblanc, a maker of luxury writing instruments, timepieces, jewellery, leather, fragrances and sunglasses, recently released its Montblanc Writers Edition Daniel Defoe fountain pen, rollerball and ballpoint pen in boutiques worldwide.

The author of one of world literature’s great epic novels and the father of realistic fiction, Daniel Defoe has captured the imagination of generations with his colourful writing, a statement said.

The Montblanc Writers Edition 2014, Daniel Defoe pays tribute to the prolific novelist, pamphleteer and journalist. The distinctive design of the writing instrument is inspired by Robinson Crusoe, Defoe’s famous adventure story published in 1719 about a castaway who finds himself stranded on a tropical island to face cannibals and mutineers.

The shape of the writing instrument is inspired by the wooden paddle that Crusoe relied on in vain to escape from the island on many occasions. Precious resin was used on the cap and barrel to achieve an effect that captures the complex texture and colour of wood, a material that symbolizes Crusoe’s life as a survivor on the remote island, reduced to the simplest of things.

Enhancing the appearance of the resin’s polished surface, the cap ring and cone are adorned with fine engravings typical of the 18th century ornaments that decorated leather-bound book covers of the time, including the first-ever edition of the novel, according to the statement.

The elaborately decorated clip in the shape of a feather is reminiscent of Crusoe’s most loyal companion on the island, the parrot Poll. The exotic bird that Crusoe eventually taught to talk features as an intricate engraving on the ruthenium-plated 750 gold nib of the fountain pen.

Another detail inspired by Crusoe’s life as a castaway, the rings of the writing instrument are elaborately decorated with filigree engravings that evoke the leather stitching of Robinson’s clothing, one of the skills he mastered after being shipwrecked, the statement said.

As a finishing touch, Daniel Defoe’s signature is immortalised as a fine engraving on the cap, in honour of the celebrated British author. – TradeArabia News Service
