Indian share index tops 17,000 points

Mumbai, September 26, 2007

India's benchmark Sensex index crossed the key 17,000-point level for the first time in opening trade on Wednesday on hopes of higher quarterly earnings and sustained overseas fund flows, dealers said.

The markets rose for the seventh straight day led by record overseas fund flows at $11 billion for the year against a backdrop of sustained economic growth of over nine percent.
