Work on Oman's Duqm Refinery project will kick start with a ground-breaking ceremony scheduled to be held today (April 26).

 

The event, at the project site in the Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm (Sezad), will be held under the auspices of Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture and will be attended by senior officials and representatives from Oman and Kuwait, said a Times of Oman report.

 

The Duqm Refinery project is a 50/50 joint venture between Oman Oil Company and Kuwait Petroleum International. It is a project that would energise the area of Duqm and make it a viable and strategic energy hub in the region, said the Duqm Refinery and Petrochemical Industries Company.

 

The ceremony is an important step forward in the development of a world-class integrated refining and petrochemicals project, said the company.

 

A consortium between Oman Oil Company and Kuwait Petroleum International, the project is aimed at boosting the refining industry of Oman and Kuwait and enhancing Duqm’s position as a new business hub in the region, it said.

 

Earlier, Duqm Refinery had awarded EPC contracts for the construction of the 230,000 bpd refinery.

 

The EPC scope of work is divided into three separate packages. The scope of EPC 1 includes the process units of the refinery, while EPC 2 consists of the utilities and offsite facilities. EPC 3 includes the product export terminal in Duqm Port, the Duqm Refinery dedicated crude storage tanks in Ras Markaz and the 80 km interconnecting pipeline from these crude tanks to Duqm Refinery.

 

The contractors for the three EPC packages are:

• EPC Package 1: Joint venture of Técnidas Reunidas and Daewoo Engineering & Construction;

• EPC Package 2: Joint venture of Petrofac International and Samsung Engineering; 

• EPC Package 3: Joint venture of Saipem and CB&I.
