Dubai to get more than 20,000 berths

Dubai, August 19, 2008

Dubai will boast of more than 20,000 berths over the next five years, said the luxury marina developer Island Global Yachting (IGY), in a report.

IGY manages 24 marinas around the world and has planned another six. The company expects to create as many as 1,500 jobs in Dubai alone with the 200 per cent rise in berths on the present numbers in the emirate, according to a Gulf News report.

’The Middle East is experiencing an explosion in the number of berths as a response to the boom in the region’s property market,’ said Michael Horrigan, chief of IGY Middle East and Europe.

’Dubai has always been a city with a strong maritime heritage but with the creation of some of the world’s most unique waterfront developments, the city now appeals to a new market: the international yachting community,’ he stated.
