Majid Al Futtaim, UNEP in sustainable initiatives deal
DUBAI, March 6, 2018
Majid Al Futtaim, an Emirati holding company, today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to collaborate in sustainable development initiatives.
The partnership concentrates on much-needed efforts to ensure a sustainable future by focusing on developing, implementing and monitoring collaborative activities in several areas including resource and energy efficiency, green building and construction, food waste, sustainability reporting and sustainable development, said a Wam news agency report.
The MoU was signed by Alain Bejjani, chief executive officer at Majid Al Futtaim Holding, and Erik Solheim, UN under-secretary general and executive director of UNEP, at a ceremony held at Majid Al Futtaim headquarters in Dubai.
"Today’s agreement is another significant milestone in our sustainability journey. We are committed to forming partnerships that support the reduction of climate change and safeguard the environment for future generations. UNEP is one of the foremost international bodies dedicated to preserving our environment, we are extremely proud to be partners on this journey. Together, we will collaborate on issues of global importance, while simultaneously moving forward with our environmental commitment to become net positive by 2040," said Bejjani.
Commenting on the signing, Solheim said there is not a single environmental problem that cannot be solved by innovation. "For that to happen we must work closely with the private sector to advance our common cause and common interests," he added.
The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
