Deira City Centre backs ‘Go Red for Women’ drive

Dubai, May 5, 2011

For the second year running, Deira City Centre has partnered with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) to support the Go Red for Women campaign.

The initiative is run by foundations and cardiology societies in more than 30 countries worldwide and is the first international campaign dedicated to education about, and the prevention of, heart disease and stroke in women. It aims to shine the spotlight on the single biggest killer of women today - cardiovascular disease (CVD), said a statement.

Due to the massive success of last year’s campaign, Deira City Centre will run the initiative over two weekends – the 6th and 7th May and again on the13th and 14th May – affording even more female shoppers with the opportunity of receiving complimentary heart health tests to aid with prevention, diagnosis and control of heart disease.

Free Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol tests, including an individual doctor’s consultation with a specialist from Dubai Hospital will be provided to female shoppers.

Dr Nooshin Mohamad Bazargani from Dubai Hospital and a member of the World Heart Federation states: ‘Every year, 8.6 million women die from cardiovascular disease. Women are usually more concerned about breast cancer even though six times as many women die from heart disease and stroke each year. Collaborating with Deira City Centre proved to be a great success last year, testing over 600 women within a two-day period. This year, our aim is to reach out to even more women throughout the Emirate.”

Fuad Al Najjar, vice president of Deira City Centre, said: “Deira City Centre is one of Dubai’s longest-standing and most popular destinations, which gives us a platform to address issues which are close to the hearts of our shoppers – quite literally in this case!  When we learned the numbers around cardiovascular disease in women – that it kills more than 8.6 million women annually -- more than the total number who die from all cancers, tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS and malaria combined, we knew that this was a vital cause to be highlighted.”

Throughout the two weekends, Deira City Centre will also feature a ‘Red Dress Gallery’, showcasing red dresses from participating fashion retailers such as Debenhams, Splash, New Look, Karen Millen and Jalabiat Yasmine.
The Gallery aims to further bolster the campaign theme ‘This is not a red dress.  It’s a red alert.’ and make it more relevant to the mall’s shoppers. The dresses displayed will also be given away as prizes via a competition on   www.facebook.com/DeiraCityCentre .  –TradeArabia News Service
