Largest breast cancer awareness bid in Dubai

Dubai, September 11, 2008

The Estee Lauder Companies Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign (BCAC) will make an attempt to create the largest human awareness ribbon for breast cancer and set a new Guinness Book record at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai on October 24.

This year's campaign engages fifteen of the Estee Lauder Companies' highly sought-after brands as well as government officials, corporate partners, sponsors and millions of people globally, who will take part in the fight against breast cancer by spreading awareness and raising funds for research towards finding a cure.

Mapochette.com, the sassy designer handbag rental company has also teamed up to raise awareness and funds for the cause.

The collaboration aims to attract the support of people of all ages to join in making a difference and history by breaking the Guinness Book of Records and creating the largest human awareness ribbon for breast cancer.

The campaign involves 4000 people forming the iconic breast cancer ribbon symbol in Dubai at the Emirates Golf Club on October 24 starting 08:30 am.

This attempt would be the first time ever in UAE that a human ribbon is formed in the shape of the now-familiar Breast cancer symbol.

The Estee Lauder Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign hopes the attempt will raise needed awareness on the affect of Breast cancer as well as encourage people to donate funds for research.

At the end of October 2008, the BCA Campaign will have distributed more than 80 million pink ribbons and millions of informational brochures through the Company's brand counters and events; illuminated more than 200 global landmarks in pink lights, and raised approximately $35 million with its retail partners for research.

In fact, the number of ribbons distributed since 1992 would create a bridge of pink between New York & China if stretched end to end.

In October, Evelyn Lauder, senior vice president, The Estee Lauder Companies, will appoint World Pink Ribbon Ambassadors in select cities around the world to help spread the BCA Campaign message to a new audience of young women and men in the hopes that early education will help save lives.

Estee Lauder Middle East has also tied up with several corporations and key people in the health community to conduct high profile awareness and charitable activities throughout the month of October in the Middle East as well as Globally.

The Pink Ambassador 'Spokesperson' appointed for the UAE/ME is Dr Houriya Kazim – leading breast cancer surgeon, founder of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of the Emirates, since 2002.

Dr Kazim has been instrumental in raising awareness and changing the perception of breast cancer in the UAE and has raised over Dh750,000 ($204,000) for coordinated research for prevention and a cure for breast cancer.

For the first time in the UAE, Dr Kazim has produced educative videos on BCA in English, Arabic, Farsi, Urdu and Malayali languages, where Estee Lauder Companies is one of the main sponsors.

The video will be launched this October in association with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, whereas The Estee Lauder Companies will give away one product as goodwill of participation and support.

Like every year, pink illuminations of landmarks will clearly be the most publicly visible display of the campaign. Burj Al Arab & Grand Hyatt Hotels have confirmed lighting up again this year in support to Estee Lauder’s campaign.

'We want to encourage everyone to wear a pink ribbon (available at all Estee Lauder Companies brands counters in retail stores), to help us spread our awareness message,' said Elizabeth Hurley, Global BCA Ambassador.

'We should tell every woman we know – whether our mother, grandmother, sister, daughter or girlfriend – that it is very important to go to their doctors for a mammogram every year, if they are over 40. Don’t leave it for
