New lactation clinics planned

Doha, August 18, 2008

Lactation management clinics will soon begin at Qatar’s Women’s Hospital and Al Khor Hospital, a report said.

Qatar co-ordinator of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and the head of the HMC’s Lactation Management Clinic (LMC), Dr Mohamed Ilyas Khan was quoted by the Gulf Times as saying the clinics will address problems facing mothers and babies during lactation rather than mere breastfeeding.

According to the doctor, when established, the full-fledged lactation breastfeeding clinics will undertake counselling on breastfeeding issues and tackle clinical cases as well as refer peculiar cases to appropriate quarters.

Dr Khan, who is presently a clinical associate at the Al Khor Hospital’s Obstetrics/ Gynaecology, hinted that, for the first time in HMC, a conference would be convened in October, which will give correct information about the breastfeeding scenario to media representatives as well as establishing contact with all the media on providing sustainable materials on different topics as regards breastfeeding.
