ABB launches drive to recruit Omanis

Muscat, December 19, 2010

ABB, a leading power and automation technology group, has announced that its local company in Oman, ABB Oman, has launched a comprehensive recruitment program for Omani nationals.

This drive expresses the company’s continuous efforts to support the government’s Omanisation programs and to develop sustainable growth working with the local community, said a statement.

ABB is cooperating with the Shinas College of Technology in Oman to train and educate young Omanis to take up technical careers and increasing knowledge of power and automation technologies.

ABB is currently in the process of employing over 50 engineers to work for Vale’s state-of-the-art iron ore pellet plant and distribution centre in Oman, where ABB recently signed a three-year maintenance agreement.

“One of the objectives of the Shinas College of Technology is to graduate highly qualified students capable of working in the Omani labour market. In cooperation with companies like ABB we are able to gain the synergy in our long term efforts to graduate Omanis equipped with remarkable technological knowledge and skills”, said Dr Qasim Al-Marashi, college dean, Shinas College of Technology.

“ABB is committed to foster the sustainable economic and social growth of Oman in educating and providing employment opportunities for Omani nationals,” said Saeed Fahim, country manager for ABB in Oman at an induction event for Omani graduates.

“Our working collaboration with local institutes of education such as Shinas College of Technology gives us a long-term perspective and opportunity to secure a local work force for prestigious projects such as Vale iron ore pellet plant.”

The Vale iron ore pellet plant and distribution centre in Oman will cater to the Middle East steel industry’s growing demand for iron ore and pellets. The new plant will operate with 720 employees, of which 202 employees will be part of ABB’s maintenance team at the site. – TradeArabia News Service
