Qtel, Microsoft to boost mobile education

Doha, February 18, 2010

The Qtel Group, a leading communications group in Qatar, will support a new mobile e-learning initiative across the Middle East region in collaboration and Microsoft.

Under the terms of the new educational relationship, Microsoft and The Qtel Group will support projects aimed at schools, universities and technical colleges in countries including Qatar, Kuwait and Oman.

The technologies used in the pilot projects, which include Windows phone devices and the Windows Live platform, will enable teachers and students to communicate, collaborate and access online services and educational materials via their mobile phones.

Both companies will also collaborate on establishing a student developer community for mobile solutions.

“Qtel will deploy all its experience to bring a strong element of mobility and connectivity to the experience of every student involved in these projects,” said Dr Nasser Marafih, chief executive officer, The Qtel Group.

“Effectively, we will be working to make the mobile phone a key tool for education and development,” he added.

“We believe our work on this project will make a distinct contribution to the training and development of the next generation, as part of The Qtel Group 2020 vision. In particular, by working with teachers, students and the wider community, we will enrich the overall educational experience.”

Marianne Röling, managing director, mobile industry sales, communications sector, Microsoft, said: “Students face new opportunities and challenges as they prepare for the 21st-century work force.”

“To be productive, effective, and competitive as they enter the working world, young people must learn to think both critically and creatively. They must also become proficient at finding and managing information, and working collaboratively with others using the latest technology,” she added.

“In response to these challenges, Microsoft and The Qtel Group will collaborate to extend the learning experiences beyond the confines of the classroom and into to the mobile world enabling anywhere and anytime learning.”

“By incorporating these tools, we can create innovative learning opportunities, challenge students to unlock their creativity, and actively prepare them for the 21st-century work force and the world that lies ahead,” Röling concluded. - TradeArabia News Service
