Hyder Consulting hosts engineering seminar

Doha, May 8, 2008

Hyder Consulting, the award-winning international advisory and design consultancy, hosted a seminar on its work on the Lusail Development Sewage Treatment Works at Qatar University.

Following the seminar, engineering students were given a guided tour of the STW site, a mega-project designed to serve various developments stretching between Lusail and The Pearl-Qatar.

Addressing the students on the day were senior engineer-water function Dick Steer and senior resident engineer at Hyder Consulting Middle East Martin Rendell.

“Qatar is investing $8.4 billion into building a world-class infrastructure throughout its populated areas,” said Steer. “As the country develops further, there will be a need for young people equipped with the kinds of skills and knowledge Hyder Consulting can provide. Lusail Development STW represents the best in engineering technologies, and we are confident the students of Qatar University will learn a great deal by using it as a test case.”

The presentation highlighted Hyder Consulting’s work on the Lusail Development sewage treatment works, which is designed to serve the development and other projects in its vicinity. The population for the works is estimated at 205,000.

A question and answer session followed the presentation, with students inquiring about several aspects of Hyder Consulting’s operations and developments in the region, with emphasis on the Lusail STW project. Finally, students got the chance to see first-hand the actual operations that are currently being undertaken by the consultancy.

"In keeping with our annual tradition, this year we took over 20 of our students from the different schools of the College of Engineering to the Lusail Development Sewage Treatment Works for an industrial visit," said head of the mechanical and industrial engineering department at Qatar University's College of Engineering Dr Abdelmagid Hammuda.

"As the very aim of the industrial visits is to go beyond academics in all possible ways, these visits have always offered insights to our engineering students about the practical applications of their theoretical knowledge."

“We are committed to supporting the educational systems and deepening the knowledge base of all the countries in which we operate,” said Rendell. “The seminar at Qatar University is only the beginning. Hyder Consulting will continue to offer its professional expertise to academic institutions across the Middle East for the benefit of the region’s future generations.”

Hyder Consulting has previously hosted a group of students from the Mirvac School of Sustainable Development of Bond University, in Australia, where it showcased its work on the iconic Burj Dubai, the world's tallest tower. – TradeArabia News Service
