Support for SMEs

Dubai , June 13, 2007

A new drive is being launched in Dubai to improve the skills of small business owners.

The Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Section at the Department of Economic Development (DED) has launched the 'SME Feasibility Study,' a new training programme that seeks to strengthen the role of small businesses in the UAE economy.

The two-week programme will cover topics including conducting feasibility studies, developing innovative ideas, preparing business plans, conducting market research, preparing cost estimates, the specifics of setting up a business and tapping sources for investment financing, said a DED official.

The DED's panel of handpicked experts have customised the programme to the needs of the local market.

'The objective of this programme is to help small business owners recognise the changing business atmosphere and work with them to develop the organisational ability to survive in the UAE's competitive environment,' said deputy director general for planning and development at DED Khalid Al Kassim.

'The programme will enable nationals to develop and improve their own businesses and enter the economic mainstream,' he added.

The 'SME Feasibility Study' focuses on both the theoretical and practical aspects of business management and is designed to conform to the manner in which business is conducted in the UAE.

'The DED is committed to addressing the specific needs of young Emirati entrepreneurs and creating a climate of growth for them. Through the programme, they will receive effective managerial tools that will be instrumental in driving their businesses forward,' added Al Kassim.

The DED's Business Development Division continues to be actively involved in organising training programmes, SME Diploma courses, conferences and seminars to benefit national entrepreneurs as part of its commitment to spreading the benefits of the UAE's economic growth throughout the community.Trade Arabia News Service
