Bahrain awards $364m water plant expansion contract

MANAMA, September 5, 2018

A consortium of three contracting companies - WTE Water Technology, Azmeel Contracting Company and Tekton Engineering and Construction - has been awarded the deal for the expansion of Tubli Wastewater Treatment Plant.

This is the fourth expansion process since the plant was launched in the early 1980s. It will help boost the performance of Tubli Plant in addition to increasing the production of the treated water used for irrigation and agricultural beautification, said a statement from the Ministry of Works, Municipalties Affairs and Urban Planning.

The BD138 million ($364 million) expansion project will also include the construction of residue disposal facilities, it stated.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of Works, Municipalties Affairs and Urban Planning, Issam bin Abdullah Khalaf said it is aimed at upgrading the sewage facilities to meet the needs of urban development and population boom by increasing the capacity from 200,000 cu m to 400,000 cu m per day.

Khalaf said the project is being funded by Saudi Fund for Development and the Kuwait Fund for Economic Development within the GCC Development Programme for Bahrain.

The project will be implemented within the next three years followed by two months of operational testing, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
