Nuberg wins $53m Saudi turnkey chemicals project

Nuberg EPC, a global EPC and lump sum turnkey (LSTK) company for speciality chemicals, has been awarded a $53 million turnkey project contract by Middle East Chemicals Company (Midchem), a leader in commodity chemicals in Saudi Arabia.

The exclusive agreement covers EPC & LSTK services and solutions for chlor alkali plant and calcium chloride plant in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and will be executed for Saudi Factory for Chlorine and Alkalies (Sachlo), Midchem's group company.

The production capacity will be 60 tonnes per day (tpd) for chlor alkali plant which is an expansion of its previous plant of 60 tpd, making it a total of 120 tpd, and 150 tpd for calcium chloride plant.

Sachlo is one of the largest manufacturers of chlor alkali and chlorine derivatives in Saudi Arabia. With its unique industry-leading R&D expertise, the company is the leader of delivering differentiated solutions addressing market needs. Chemicals produced in the facility will serve the needs of downstream and petrochemical, hydrocarbon and energy industry in the domestic Saudi market as well as the Middle East & Africa (MEA) and GCC region.

The chemical project is Midchem's second alliance with Nuberg EPC after successful commissioning of its 60 TPD greenfield chlor alkali plant designed and delivered for Sachlo in 2012. Being its fifth turnkey project in Saudi Arabia and second from Midchem, the project is a testimony of Nuberg's global expertise in project management capabilities, engineering services, international quality construction and on-time project delivery.This association firmly establishes Nuberg EPC's world-class and well recognised credentials for EPC projects in Saudi Arabia. Nuberg EPC is also executing three other projects in Saudi Arabia which include anisole plant and sulphuric acid plant for ADDAR Industries and sulpholane chemical plant for Global Company for Chemical Industries in Jubail industrial city, said a statement.

Nuberg EPC's scope of services for this project includes process, technology know-how, basic and detailed engineering, design, procurement, manufacture and supply of plant equipment including complete erection, construction, project management, commissioning and start-up of the plant, it said.

The agreement was penned down in MidChem's office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where AK Tyagi, chairman and managing director (CMD), Nuberg; Dr Ibrahim Bin Aldubabe, president, Middle East Chemicals; and dignitaries from both companies were present, it added.

The project is strategic as it will help expand our chlor alkali and chlorine derivative portfolio in Saudi market and demonstrate our world-class credentials in executing turnkey projects from concept development to commissioning.”

The chlor alkali plant will deploy bipolar membrane cell technology provided by Inovyn (erstwhile INEOS technologies), technology licensor for the expansion plant. Inovyn which is a UK based technology supplier with over 50 years of experience has previously collaborated with Nuberg EPC for Midchem's 60 TPD chlor alkali plant commissioned in 2012.

Other than this, Nuberg EPC and Innovyn have partnered and delivered chlor alkali plants for Inovyn in Sweden, Tasnim Chemical Complex in Bangladesh, Fluoder in Paraguay, SARL SASKO in Algeria, Egyptian Petrochemical Company in Egypt and Global Heavy Chemicals in Bangladesh.

For calcium chloride plant, Nuberg EPC will partner with one of the world renowned technology licensors having technology for making calcium chloride flakes with 77-80 per cent and 94-96 per cent concentration, it stated. – TradeArabia News Service
