Iraq eyes 32-km rail link to Iranian city
BAGHDAD, January 2, 2017
Iraq’s state-run Iraqi Republic Railways (IRR) is working on an ambitious plan to link its port city Basra to Al Shalamcheh border terminal in neighbouring Iran through a 32-km-long extension, said a report.
Several international companies have expressed interest in investing in the scheme, but IRR said it is still looking for potential investors, reported Iraq Buisness News.
On completion, the 32-km-long extension will help passengers easily pass between the two countries, especially during the pilgrimage seasons, stated the report, citing IRR information director Abdul Sattar Mohsen.
The rail extension will in turn be linked to an internal rail line in Iraq to include the cities of Basra, Baghdad, Yusufiya, Musayyib and Karbala, he added.
