A senior municipal official in eastern Saudi Arabia has proposed the construction of two causeways linking the kingdom with neighbouring Bahrain and Qatar, said a report.

The causeway between Al Ahsa and Bahrain would be 40 km long and would be located around 100 km from the King Fahad Causeway which has linked Bahrain and Saudi Arabia since November 1986, reported the Gulf News.

The proposed causeway would be 380 km away from Riyadh, stated the report, citing Adel Bin Mohammad Al Melhem, the head of Al Ahsa Municipality.

He made the suggestions at a recent conference on “The Role of Municipalities in Achieving Sustainable Development," held at Doha.

The causeway with Qatar would be 25 km long and would be 70 km away from the proposed link with Bahrain and 425 km from Riyadh, said the report.
 
The Saudi official highlighted a futuristic vision about investments and cooperation between the GCC countries.

The 25-km-long King Fahad Causeway is the only one of its kind between two countries in the GCC and the longest in the Arab world, said the report.

Opened by the late King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia and the late Amir Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa of Bahrain, it is today one of the busiest traffic areas between Arab countries.

In September 2014, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia had announced plans to build a new link to be named “King Hamad Causeway”, it added.
