Qatar .... racing against time for project completion.

Qatar in race to ready stadiums for 2022 World Cup

DOHA, October 2, 2014

Work is now under way on five 2022 Fifa World Cup venues that are in different stages of construction in Qatar, The Peninsula said in a report.

Additionally, demolition has begun on Al Rayyan Stadium that will be rebuilt to increase seating capacity from 22,000 to 40,000.

A joint venture between Midmac Contracting and a subsidiary of the Belgian Besix Group, Six Construct, is overseeing the work at four more venues, said the report.

This includes the enabling works at Al Wakrah Stadium and Qatar Foundation Stadium; the early works at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor City; and main construction works at Khalifa International Stadium, which includes the addition of a new roof and cooling technology and increasing capacity to 45,000.

Work on the Al Wakrah and Al Bayt stadiums is set to be completed in 2018, it stated.

Dar Al Handasah and Projacs is the design consultant and project manager of Khalifa International Stadium and Al Bayt Stadium, respectively. Aspire Zone Foundation is the delivery organisation of both, the report added.

Meanwhile, the Qatar Foundation Stadium at Education City is in the detailed design development stage. The main contract tendering process is currently under way and an announcement will be made upon its completion. The design consultant is RFA Fenwick, while the project management is being undertaken by Astad.

All proposed stadiums and training sites will be cooled to an optimal 26 degrees Celsius, said the report.

The cooling technology was tested this summer at cooled, open-air fan zones at Katara Beach (Doha) and at the Aspire Zone Foundation. Cooling technology that will be in place in each of the proposed host venues will allow football to be played in comfortable conditions throughout the year in Qatar, it added.
