Qatar-Bahrain Causeway to be unveiled at meet
Houston, November 19, 2009
KBR will unveil the design for the world’s longest marine causeway, the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway, at the Bridges Middle East Conference in Abu Dhabi on November 22.
As Programme Manager, KBR is responsible for management of the design and construction on behalf of the client, the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Foundation, while the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Consortium is the design/build contractor. All parties are presenting at the conference.
When completed, this multi-modal connection of approximately 40 km between Bahrain and Qatar will feature a two-lane dual carriageway, including 17 km of embankments and a further 23 km of viaducts and bridges, with two bow-string arch bridges soaring up to 40 m above shipping channels.
The scheme includes the infrastructure to support freight and high-speed rail passenger traffic. It is envisioned that the railway will connect Kuwait to Oman, to become the main rail link for the Arabian Gulf countries.
'I am confident that KBR’s partnership with the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Foundation (QBCF) and our unwavering commitment to our client and the project will see the successful completion of this long-awaited infrastructure,' said Colin Elliott, KBR’s president, Infrastructure and Minerals.
In November 2008, the QBCF awarded KBR the contract to provide design management, project management, and construction management services for the Qatar-Bahrain road and rail marine crossing.
The QBCF is a bi-national institution created in 2006 by the Emir of Qatar and the King of Bahrain to develop and manage the causeway project.
KBR is a global engineering, construction and services company supporting the energy, hydrocarbon, government services, minerals, civil infrastructure, power and industrial markets.-TradeArabia News Service
