'Green' buildings complex for Qatar

Doha, March 31, 2008

Buildings that will come up in all the 92 plots at Energy City Qatar (ECQ) will be powered by alternative sources of energy, a report said.

The initial phase of the construction will be completed in 2009 and the entire project is scheduled to be completed by 2012, Peninsula newspaper said.

Spread across an area of 72 hectares in Lusail, the project strictly adheres to the global 'Green Building' norms, Hisham Al Emadi, CEO said.

Work is progressing as per the standards set by international certification bodies for an ideal 'green building' project, he said.

The norms include effective utilisation of natural resources, increasing the thermal efficiency of the structures, proper venting of harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, minimum usage of carpet in utility rooms and ensuring proper insulation and venting by using structural insulated panels for floors, walls and roof.

The new construction method is expected to cost 5 to 7 per cent over what it would have normally cost, Al Emadi said.
