UAE subsidies top $10bn in 9 months of 2017

ABU DHABI, April 4, 2018

The value of subsidy and social privileges and benefits provided by the Federal Government during the first nine months of 2017 amounted to Dh38.4 billion ($10.45 billion) against Dh34 billion during the corresponding period in 2016, according to Ministry of Finance data.

These include price subsidies, social benefits and other privileges provided to UAE nationals, including plots of land and residential units as well as money transfers to government-affiliated companies, reported Emirates news agency Wam.

The growth in social benefits and subsidy recorded during the first nine months of 2017 reflects the government's keenness to ensure social welfare and economic wellbeing for UAE nationals.

In more detail, the state subsidy provided for commodities and social aid as well as for state-run companies reached Dh6.7 billion during Q1 2017, Dh6.6 billion in Q2 and Dh4.4 in Q3, with Q4 figures yet to be released.

Social benefits that include plots of lands and housing loans as well as other privileges hit Dh8.3 billion in Q1 2017, Dh6.1 billion in Q2 and Dh6.2 in Q3, with Q4 figures yet to be released.
