Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure and Simwave are launching the first modules of a specialised training programme focused on transfer equipment at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, marking a new milestone in their strategic partnership.

The programme aims to address crew competency gaps as LNG bunkering expands and alternative fuels such as methanol, ammonia and hydrogen gain momentum across the maritime industry. The transition is creating new operational demands, with crews increasingly required to handle the transfer of cryogenic and hazardous products between independently operated assets.

The collaboration combines Trelleborg’s expertise in critical transfer systems with Simwave’s training capabilities to provide structured, equipment-specific learning covering safe operation, maintenance and best practices across the transfer interface.

The companies said existing training and certification frameworks have not evolved at the same pace as the industry’s fuel transition, highlighting the need for practical competency development tailored to specific fuels and equipment.

The initial programme consists of short e-learning modules delivered through Simwave’s platform, with each module concluding with a certificate of completion. Topics include LNG composite hose characteristics and handling, visual inspection procedures, the Universal Safety Link (USL) in bunkering operations, and service procedures for Cryo DC tank-end units.

The modules represent the first phase of a broader curriculum that will eventually cover routine and emergency scenarios across Trelleborg’s transfer equipment portfolio, including cryogenic LNG hoses, safety links, ship-to-shore links and emergency release systems.

Further modules are being developed for advanced operational scenarios and equipment-specific procedures covering LNG bunkering vessels, LNG carriers, alternative-fueled vessels and floating and fixed LNG terminals.

For shipowners and operators, the programme offers a standardised approach to crew development designed to reduce operational variability, reinforce safe transfer practices, support equipment longevity and improve preparedness for emergency shutdown situations.
