100 teams make it to Round Two of Airbus Competition

Two Middle East teams selected for Airbus competition

DUBAI, February 26, 2015

Two teams from the Middle East have made it to Round Two of the global student competition ‘Fly Your Ideas’, organised by leading aircraft manufacturer Airbus and Unesco.

A total of 100 teams were selected for the second round of the competition, having passed a thorough evaluation process by over 50 Airbus experts and innovators judging more than 500 ideas.

The 100 teams comprise of 413 students representing 48 different nationalities. The two teams from the Middle East comprise of four students from the UAE and five from Jordan. The UAE team is working on innovating a passenger entertainment system with a noise cancellation headset and a smart goggle. On the other hand the Jordan team are working towards innovating a sophisticated server which stores data transmitted from cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR). Other representatives from the Middle East also come from Syria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

“I am impressed by the diversity of the teams that have made it through to Round Two this year,” said Charles Champion, Airbus executive vice president engineering. “It is very telling of a generation who no longer thinks in silos but instead aspires to collaborate across traditional boundaries such as gender, nationality and discipline. This reflects Airbus’ ambition to work with greater agility across the company, and I am sure our Airbus mentors and experts are very excited about the fresh way of thinking they will get during these 100 days before the next round.”

Each of the teams will now be attributed an Airbus mentor and an Airbus expert to help take their ideas further and share their insights of real-life aviation constraints over a 100 day period. The top five teams will make it to the final and present their ideas at a live event at Airbus facilities in May. The winning team will receive a €30,000 ($34,122) prize and the runner up team €15,000 ($17,061). – TradeArabia News Service
