Kuwait announces formation of new government

KUWAIT CITY, December 29, 2021

HH the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah of Kuwait approved in an Amiri order on Tuesday the formation of a new cabinet comprising 15 ministers led by the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah, reported Kuwait News Agency.

The Prime Minister would be tasked with informing the National Assembly of the order effective on the date of issue, it stated.

This is the Gulf state's third cabinet this year after the previous governments resigned in the standoff that had hindered state efforts for fiscal reform, according to a Reuters report.

The new cabinet has a woman minister and includes three opposition MPs and one pro-government lawmaker, in a departure from past governments that normally included only one MP.

The government has tried to temporarily boost finances while more structural and fiscal reforms remain deadlocked, including a debt law to tap international markets.

The Oil Minister Mohammad Al Fares was reappointed, while Abdul Wahab Al Rasheed, head of the non-governmental Kuwait Economic Society, has taken over as finance minister replacing Khalifa Hamada.

The new health minister is Khaled Al-Saeed, whose predecessor had steered Kuwait through the Covid-19 pandemic.
