Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) will take up a number of top projects in 2014, including the Dh2 billion ($544 million) water canal project, which will link the Business Bay in Dubai with the Arabian Gulf, a top official said.

The Dubai Water Canal project will pass through the heart of Dubai in a course extending three kilometers, explained Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the Board and executive director of RTA.

“Another mega project is Al Ittihad Bridge project, which is estimated to cost more than Dh1 billion, besides completing the Dubai Tram project, coaxing a quantum shift in Dubai’s public transport experience upon official operation in the fourth quarter of this year," Al Tayer said.

He was speaking on the occasion of RTA’s eighth anniversary held at the Meydan Hotel in the presence of RTA’s CEOs, directors and employees.

He noted that the past year saw the completion of many vital projects, most notably the opening of all intersections of Al Khail Road, costing Dh1.9 billion, Rashid Hospital Tunnels costing Dh722 million, World Trade Center bridges at Zabeel costing Dh719 million, Widening & Improvement of Umm Suqeim Road, in addition to constructing many flyovers, launching a wide range of smart applications that enabled customers complete their transactions via smartphones.
