National Real Estate deals revived

Kuwait City, June 25, 2007

A Kuwaiti court has overruled a government decision to revoke two shopping mall contracts with National Real Estate Company, the firm said.

The finance ministry revoked the build, operate and transfer agreements for the Wataniya and Watya shopping complexes, citing violations by National Real Estate.

A court upheld National Real Estate's bid to have the contracts reinstated on Sunday, the company said in a statement.

The statement did not give the value of the deal. Company officials could not be reached for comment.

Al Qabas daily quoted National Real Estate's chairman, Jamil Al Sultan, as telling a meeting of shareholders on Sunday the firm would seek for compensation over the cancellations.

The government cancelled a series of deals with National Real Estate and logistics affiliate Agility last year based on a report by the Audit Bureau, which was asked by parliament to probe contracts with the private sector.

Both firms have denied any wrongdoing. Courts have ruled in their favour in several cases challenging the government decisions.Reuters
