BYD, Alfanar ink 10,500MWh BESS contracts in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has awarded major contracts to Chinese group BYD Auto Company and Saudi utility major Alfanar Projects for developing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a combined capacity of 2,500 MW/10,000 MWh across Saudi Arabia.

As per the deal, BYD Auto, a key brand of Chinese multinational manufacturing company BYD Company, will be responsible for the design, supply and supervision of installation, testing and commissioning work of BESS as well as its maintenance, while Alfanar Projects will take care of the EPC work for the BESS substation.

Unveiling the list of BESS projects, Saudi Electricity Company said these will come up in the following key locations across the country - Riyadh (500 MW/2,500 MWh); Qaisumah (500 MW/2,500 MWh);
Dawadmi (500 MW/2,500 MWh); Al Jouf (500 MW/2,500 MWh) and Rabigh (500 MW/2,500 MWh).

On the BESS plants, SEC said it will provide load shifting as main application while providing black start, frequency regulation and voltage support application through a selectable part of the system’s total capacity for the network at their respective Point of Interconnection (POI).

The BESS is expected to replace part load operation of existing power plants by charging and discharging according to the system load variations, primary and secondary reserve and shall also operate to provide voltage and frequency regulations, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
