Work starts on $160m Kuwait port redevelopment project

Kuwait Ports Authority has launched the first phase of Shuwaikh Port Redevelopment Project being implemented at a cost of KD48.7 million ($160 million).

South Korean builder Hyundai E&C and the Gulf Construction and Marine Works Company have been awarded the main contract for the project, which will be completed within the next three years.

The scope of work includes redevelopment and rehabilitation of the 1.3-km-long docks  of Shuwaikh port as well as the maintenance of the western docks and the suspended part of dock 8, reported Kuna.

This would enable Shuwaikh Port to receive a great diversity of ships, increasing the number of ships throughout the year and positively reflecting on the movement of commercial goods exchange, said the report.

The project is one of the authority's main projects that fall under the development plan for a New Kuwait 2035, it added.
