VCU students compete to design 'Lady in Red' wardrobe

Qatari fashion students to design Kempinski's concierge wardrobe

DOHA, February 26, 2015

Luxury resort Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl – Doha has partnered with Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar) to offer students a chance to intern for six months at the upscale property by creating a customised wardrobe for its concierge.

Described as the First Lady of the hotel, the concierge is easily recognisable with her elegant persona and signature red clothing.

Eight local students in the Senior Fashion Class will compete to design a bespoke wardrobe collection for the Lady in Red – Kempinski’s unique concept which complements the concierge role

Marsa Malaz Kempinski’s collaboration with Qatar’s leading art and design school is part of the vibrant learning experiences at VCUQatar, helping to build and maintain indispensable connections for both partners in the local community.

Wissam Suleiman, general manager, Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl – Doha, said: “This unique opportunity is a project we feel very passionately about as we look to nurture home-grown designers and artisans. We are honoured to be working with such inspiring talents at VCUQatar. The Lady in Red is an iconic figure for Qatar’s new premier destination, and as such needs a chic and bespoke wardrobe, which will reflect the identity and style of Kempinski.”

“We are delighted when opportunities like these come along as they offer the students the chance to implement their design skills at the highest level, working with a world renowned brand,” said Sandra Wilkins, chair of the Fashion Department at VCUQatar. “Students are challenged to really consider how fashion functions in the real world. They have to think critically not only about the form and function of the garments, but also the suitability of the designs to meet the clients’ needs.” – TradeArabia News Service
